Reading Volunteers

"Children definitely benefit from having "someone special" to read to them."

Janet Mulholland, teacher

Could you spare maybe an hour a week to help a child read? If you are a teacher, could your children use a little extra individual attention? Our reading volunteers programme links people from the business world to hundreds of different schools.

Volunteers agree to spend maybe an hour a week in a local school, listening to children read and offering support and encouragement. Most children show a measurable improvement thanks to the individual attention.

"It's a lovely thing to do. The pleasure comes from seeing the children develop."

Laura Bottomley, Leo Burnett Associates

Employees gain in confidence from reading to children - developing communication skills and immense job satisfaction. As well as reading, volunteers can help with number and IT skills too, working one-to-one in small groups.

Some volunteers visit just once a month, others choose to make weekly visits. We can arrange visits to suit your schedule. Volunteers are trained and supported throughout their visits to the school.
