Work Experience for Southwark's Special Needs Students
Southwark Education Business Alliance is piloting a new work initiative for students from three of its special needs schools. Working in partnership with Southwark Environment and Leisure, selected students from Spa School, Highshore School and Tuke School have been offered work experience in Southwark Council's Estate Maintenance Department.
Students undertake a series of structured, short placements allowing them the opportunity of experiencing the different areas of work before joining the team on six months probation. At the end of the probationary period, if the student has proved suitable, they will be offered a full-time job with the same opportunities, as the department's other employees.
Carol Kay, Director of the Southwark Education Business Alliance said: "The transition from school to the world of work is always difficult for students with learning difficulties. By providing these students with work experience placements, we hope to ease the process."
