The Future Healtcare Workforce

The UK healthcare sector employs some two million people – with a large slice of those jobs located in and around London.

London’s healthcare employers include NHS hospitals, independent hospitals and clinics, dentists and voluntary sector providers too.

To continue to thrive, all these employers need young people leaving school with the desire, commitment and skills needed to work in healthcare.

Competing for skills

Persuading people to join the healthcare sector has to start with work in schools, acknowledges John Rogers, Chief Executive of Skills for Health.

“Perception of the NHS is one of its weak areas, and we probably don’t do enough work in schools,” he says.

“Other industries are going to schools and working with the 14-plus age group. We are competing with the likes of Tesco, City firms and the banks, and we do need to attract a large percentage of school leavers.”

Skills shortages

The healthcare sector must compete for the workforce of tomorrow, and that means engaging students while they are still at school.

London Central Education Business Alliance is working alongside employers to make sure that:

  • students are aware of career pathways into the healthcare sector – and understand how the choices they make will affect their future careers.
  • Qualifications systems (including the new 14-19 diploma) are relevant to the needs of employers, so that students are leaving education with skills that the healthcare sector needs.

The more employers we engage, the bigger the impact we can have.
