Filling the Skills Gap

Employers across the UK have joined forces to create skills councils – organisations working to reduce skills gaps in key industries across the UK.

There are now 20 skills councils across the UK (covering different industries), led by employers but working closely with trade unions, colleges, schools and other stakeholders.

Two are dedicated solely to identifying and filling skills gaps in the creative and media industries:

  • Skillset is the Skills Council for the audiovisual industry including radio, TV, film, computer gaming, interactive media and photo-imaging.
  • Creative & Cultural Skills is the Skills Council for advertising, crafts, cultural heritage, design, music, performing, literary and visual arts.

What they do

Skillset and Creative & Cultural Skills are:

  • identifying skills gaps, in partnership with employers
  • working with schools and colleges to increase the supply of people leaving education with the skills needed by creative and media businesses
  • developing careers advice, apprenticeships and other pathways, so that young people can develop the skills needed by business
  • talking to government to influence national policies affecting skills and productivity.
